📢 Quick Update: UPSC CDS I 2026 was conducted on 12 April 2026 for 451 vacancies. CDS II 2026 is expected in September 2026. If you're targeting CDS II or building a foundation for 2027, this is the right time to get the syllabus sorted.

The Combined Defence Services Examination (CDSE) — more commonly known as CDS — is one of the most respected defence entrance exams in India. Conducted twice a year by UPSC, it's the gateway to becoming a commissioned officer in the Indian Army, Navy, Air Force, or Officers' Training Academy. If you're serious about a defence career with officer-level entry, this is the exam you need to crack.

Now, what makes CDS unique is its clean, structured syllabus. It's not overwhelming. Three subjects — English, General Knowledge, and Mathematics — cover everything. The real challenge is the depth of preparation and your consistency over time. This page gives you the complete CDS Syllabus 2026, the exam pattern for each academy, the SSB Interview breakdown, and a study strategy that doesn't waste your time.

2. Academies Covered Under CDS Exam

CDS is your ticket into four of India's most prestigious military training institutions. Which one you're aiming for determines whether you need to prepare Maths or not:

🤵
Indian Military Academy (IMA)
Dehradun • Army • Permanent Commission
✈️
Air Force Academy (AFA)
Hyderabad • Air Force • Permanent Commission
🏳️
Officers Training Academy (OTA)
Chennai • Short Service Commission • Men & Women
💡 Key difference: IMA, INA, and AFA require all three papers (English + GK + Maths). OTA only requires English and GK — no Mathematics. If Maths is your weak subject, OTA entry gives you a way in without it. That said, OTA is for Short Service Commission — while IMA/INA/AFA leads to Permanent Commission.

3. CDS 2026 Eligibility Criteria

AcademyEducational QualificationAge LimitGender
IMA (Army)Graduation in any discipline from a recognized university19–24 yearsMale only
INA (Navy)Engineering degree from a recognized university/institution19–24 yearsMale only

OTA (Women – SSC-W)Graduation in any discipline from a recognized university19–25 yearsFemale
⚠️ Final year students can apply — but you must submit proof of graduation before the date specified by your respective academy. Don't apply if you're more than one exam away from completing your degree.

5. Negative Marking – Understand This Before You Sit for the Exam

−1/3
One-Third Mark Deducted Per Wrong Answer

For every wrong answer across all CDS papers — English, GK, and Maths — 1/3 of a mark (approximately 0.33 marks) is deducted. This applies to all MCQs. Unattempted questions carry absolutely no penalty — zero marks deducted.

So here's the real math: if you mark 3 wrong answers, you lose 1 full mark. If you're unsure between two options and randomly pick one — you're essentially gambling. The smarter move is to skip when you're less than 60-70% confident. CDS toppers typically attempt 80–90 questions per paper rather than all 120, with very high accuracy on the ones they do attempt.

6. CDS English Syllabus 2026

The English paper is the same for both IMA/INA/AFA and OTA. It tests your command over the language — grammar, vocabulary, reading comprehension, and sentence structure. The level is roughly Class 12 to early graduation standard.

📚 Grammar & Usage
  • Spotting Errors in sentences
  • Sentence Improvement & Correction
  • Fill in the Blanks – Grammar rules
  • Voice Change – Active to Passive
  • Narration – Direct to Indirect Speech
  • Parts of Speech – Nouns, Pronouns, Verbs
  • Articles, Prepositions, Conjunctions
  • Tenses – Present, Past, Future forms
💬 Vocabulary & Comprehension
  • Synonyms and Antonyms
  • One Word Substitution
  • Idioms and Phrases
  • Reading Comprehension Passages
  • Ordering of Sentences in a Passage
  • Ordering of Words in a Sentence
  • Words often Confused (Homophones)
  • Cloze Test – Fill in blanks in passages
💡 Reading Comprehension carries the most questions in the English paper. Don't just study grammar rules in isolation — practice reading editorials from The Hindu or Indian Express daily. Your comprehension speed and accuracy directly determines your English score.

7. General Knowledge Syllabus 2026

The GK paper is the widest section — it covers everything from Indian History to current scientific developments. But don't let that intimidate you. The question level is designed to test a well-read graduate, not a specialist. Here's exactly what you need to cover:

🌎 Indian History
  • Ancient India – Indus Valley, Vedic Period
  • Medieval India – Delhi Sultanate, Mughal Empire
  • Modern India – British Rule, Social Reforms
  • Indian National Movement – Freedom Struggle
  • Role of Bihar in Independence (Gandhi, Champaran)
  • Post-Independence India
  • Important Personalities & Events
🏠 Indian Polity & Constitution
  • Salient Features of Indian Constitution
  • Fundamental Rights, DPSP, Fundamental Duties
  • Parliament – Lok Sabha & Rajya Sabha
  • Executive – President, PM, Council of Ministers
  • Judiciary – Supreme Court, High Courts
  • State Government Structure
  • Elections & Election Commission of India
  • Important Constitutional Amendments
🌏 Geography

  • Budget – Revenue & Capital
  • Inflation – Types & Causes
  • Banking System – RBI & Monetary Policy
  • Agriculture & Rural Economy
  • Major Government Economic Schemes
  • International Trade & Balance of Payments
🔬 General Science
  • Physics – Motion, Force, Energy, Sound, Light
  • Chemistry – Elements, Compounds, Reactions
  • Biology – Human Body, Diseases, Nutrition, Cell
  • Environmental Science & Ecology
  • Space Science – ISRO Missions, Satellites
  • Defence Technology & Weapons Systems
  • Recent Scientific Inventions & Discoveries
📰 Current Affairs
  • National & International News (last 12 months)
  • India's Defence News – Exercises, Acquisitions
  • Sports – Awards, World Records, Competitions
  • Awards & Honours – National & International
  • Important Government Schemes 2025–26
  • Summits, Meetings & International Events
  • Important Books & Authors (Defence context)
⚠️ Defence-specific GK is very important in CDS. Questions about Indian Army structure, military ranks, famous battles, defence exercises (like Yudh Abhyas, Indra, Malabar) and recent defence acquisitions come up regularly. Most GK guides don't emphasize this — make sure you cover it separately.

8. Elementary Mathematics Syllabus 2026 (IMA/INA/AFA Only)

Good news — the Maths syllabus for CDS is based on Class 10th standard. It's not the engineering-level Maths of GATE or even the depth of UPSC Civil Services. If you were decent at Maths in school, this section is completely manageable with focused preparation.

🔢 Arithmetic
  • Number System – Natural, Integer, Rational numbers
  • Elementary Number Theory – Divisibility, Factors, Primes
  • HCF & LCM
  • Ratio & Proportion
  • Percentage
  • Simple & Compound Interest
  • Profit, Loss & Discount
  • Time, Speed & Distance
  • Time & Work
  • Average & Mixture & Alligation
📕 Algebra
  • Basic Operations on Algebraic Expressions
  • Factors & Remainder Theorem
  • H.C.F. and L.C.M. of Polynomials
  • Quadratic Equations – Roots & Discriminant
  • Linear Equations – 2 & 3 variables
  • Logarithms – Laws and Applications
  • Set Language & Set Notation
  • Rational Expressions
  • 📉 Trigonometry
    • Sine, Cosine, Tangent & their Reciprocals
    • Trigonometric Identities
    • Values of trigonometric ratios (0, 30, 45, 60, 90 degrees)
    • Heights and Distances
    • Use of Trigonometric Tables
    △ Geometry
    • Lines & Angles – Properties
    • Triangles – Congruence & Similarity
    • Circles – Chords, Tangents, Arcs
    • Quadrilaterals – Parallelogram, Rectangle, Square
    • Polygons – Regular, Sum of Angles
    • Concurrence of medians, altitudes & angle bisectors
    📊 Mensuration
    • Areas of Squares, Rectangles, Parallelograms, Triangles, Circles
    • Areas of Figures Decomposable into Plane Figures
    • Surface Area & Volume – Cuboid, Cylinder, Cone, Sphere
    📺 Statistics
    • Collection & Tabulation of Statistical Data
    • Graphical Representation – Bar Graph, Pie Chart, Histogram
    • Measures of Central Tendency – Mean, Median, Mode
    • Frequency Polygon & Ogive
💡 Maths scoring tip: The Maths paper has 100 questions for 100 marks. Most candidates skip 20–30 questions they're unsure about and still score 55–70 marks with high accuracy. Attempting all 100 and getting 30 wrong costs you 10 marks in net score — so selective accuracy beats reckless attempts every time.

    9. SSB Interview – The 5-Day Process

Clearing the written exam gets you to the SSB. And this is where many candidates — even those with great written scores — get stuck. The SSB is a 5-day personality and intelligence assessment worth 300 marks. It's not about cramming — it's about who you are and how you think.

    D1
    Stage 1 Screening
OIR Test + Picture Perception & Discussion Test (PPDT)
    D2

OIROfficer Intelligence RatingVerbal & Non-verbal intelligence, cognitive ability
PPDTPicture Perception & Discussion TestImagination, story construction, group dynamics
TATThematic Apperception TestPersonality traits through story narration
WATWord Association Test60 words in 30 minutes — instinctive responses
SRTSituation Reaction Test60 situations — practical decision-making under pressure
SDSelf DescriptionHow you describe yourself — consistency with other tests
Personal InterviewIn-depth 30–45 min interview on your life, interests, defence knowledge
GTO TasksGroup Testing OfficerLeadership, teamwork, practical problem-solving in group settings
💡 SSB Selection Rate: Typically only 1 in 8–10 candidates who appear for SSB get recommended. The written exam gets you to SSB — your personality, leadership qualities, and mental toughness get you through SSB. Start working on yourself — not just your study habits — well before the exam.

    10. CDS Officer Salary & Benefits After Selection

    12. Preparation Strategy – How to Approach CDS 2026

    • Start with English, not Maths. English questions have the highest weightage relative to preparation time needed. A well-prepared English paper can compensate for an average Maths score. 30 minutes of daily English reading and grammar practice is enough if sustained for 3–4 months.
    • Current Affairs is a multiplier in GK. The GK paper rewards candidates who follow defence news closely — military exercises, new weapons acquisitions, ISRO missions, border agreements. Spend 15 minutes daily on news and 30 minutes on Lucent or standard GK books.
    • For Maths — focus on Arithmetic first. Arithmetic topics (percentage, ratio, time-work, interest) account for 35–45% of Maths questions and are the most solvable with quick practice. Don't spend weeks on Geometry if Arithmetic isn't strong yet.
    • Solve previous year papers from Day 1. Not after "covering the syllabus" — from the very start. CDS PYQs help you understand what's actually tested, avoid over-studying irrelevant topics, and build exam temperament early.
    • Negative marking means selective attempting. Aim for 85–90% accuracy on whatever you attempt rather than 100% coverage of the paper. 80 correct out of 100 attempted beats 120 attempted with 40 wrong every time.
    • Start SSB prep alongside written exam prep. Many candidates clear the written exam but fail SSB because they start preparing for it too late. Read newspapers, participate in group discussions (even informal ones with friends), and practice speaking confidently about current affairs and defence topics.
    • Physical fitness matters for SSB. The GTO (Group Testing Officer) tasks involve physical activities — obstacle courses, group tasks. Being physically fit isn't just for selection after SSB — it shows confidence and energy throughout the 5-day process.

    13. Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Q1. What is the CDS exam and who conducts it?

The Combined Defence Services Examination (CDSE or CDS) is a national-level defence entrance exam conducted twice a year by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). It selects commissioned officers for the Indian Military Academy (IMA), Indian Naval Academy (INA), Air Force Academy (AFA), and Officers' Training Academy (OTA). It's one of the most prestigious defence recruitment exams in India.

Q2. What is the syllabus for CDS exam 2026?

CDS 2026 syllabus has 3 subjects for IMA, INA, AFA: English (100 marks), General Knowledge (100 marks), and Elementary Mathematics (100 marks). For OTA, only English and General Knowledge are needed — no Mathematics. GK covers History, Geography, Polity, Economy, Science, and Current Affairs. Maths is Class 10 level covering Arithmetic, Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, Mensuration and Statistics.

Q3. Is there negative marking in CDS 2026?

Yes. 1/3 mark is deducted for every wrong answer in all three CDS papers — English, GK, and Maths. Unattempted questions carry no penalty. This means for every 3 wrong answers, you lose 1 full mark. Selective, accurate attempting is the right strategy — not attempting all questions blindly.

Q4. Can women apply for CDS exam?

Yes. Women can apply for the OTA (Officers' Training Academy) entry under the Short Service Commission (Women) SSC-W route. They appear in English and GK papers only. However, IMA, INA, and AFA entries are currently for male candidates only.

Q5. What is the SSB Interview in CDS selection?

SSB (Services Selection Board) is a 5-day personality and intelligence assessment worth 300 marks. It includes psychological tests (TAT, WAT, SRT, SD), Group Testing Officer (GTO) tasks (group discussions, obstacle courses, planning tasks), and a Personal Interview. Only candidates who pass Day 1 Screening continue to Days 2–5. The final merit is based on Written + SSB marks combined.

Q6. What is the salary of CDS selected officers?

A newly commissioned Lieutenant receives a basic pay of Rs. 56,100 per month along with Military Service Pay of Rs. 15,500. Total gross salary including DA, HRA, Transport Allowance and other allowances comes to approximately Rs. 80,000–90,000+ per month. Additional benefits include free accommodation, free medical care (ECHS), CSD canteen access, uniform allowance, and pension after qualifying service.

Q7. What is the age limit for CDS exam 2026?

Age limit varies by academy: IMA, INA, AFA — 19 to 24 years; OTA (Men & Women) — 19 to 25 years. Age is calculated as of the first day of the month of the course commencing at the respective academy. Final year students who meet the age criteria can also apply.

Q8. Is CDS Maths syllabus difficult?

Not at all — compared to other national exams. CDS Maths is based on Class 10th standard covering Arithmetic, Algebra, Trigonometry, Geometry, Mensuration, and Statistics. If you were reasonably good at school Maths, a focused 60–90 days of practice using Arihant's CDS Maths and RS Aggarwal is sufficient to score 60–75+ marks.
